Friday, 27th April 2007: Dundrum Town Centre has been named as the ICSC (International Council of Shopping Centres) European Shopping Centre of the year for 2007 at their European conference in Warsaw. The award was presented to Don Nugent, Dundrum Town Centre Director, by Michael Kercheval, President and CEO of ICSC.
Shopping Centres throughout Europe were visited and judged as part of a rigorous adjudication system, which has as its criteria: Tenant Mix, Community Integration, Vision, Customer Service Ethos, Management Systems and Sustainability. From an initial list of 24, a short list of 3 were chosen, which included Shopping Centre Sello in Finland (84,000 Sq. Mtrs.), Silesia City Centre, in Poland (65,000 Sq. Mtrs) and Dundrum Town Centre (79,000 Sq. Mtrs.)
Commenting on the awards, Don Nugent, Dundrum Town Centre Director, said: ‘This is an extraordinary honour for an Irish Shopping Centre and follows on from Dundrum’s success last year in pre-empting the world famous “Mall of the Emirates” in Dubai for international honours. It has never before been achieved by an Irish centre and is genuine recognition of how we in Ireland have taken our place on the world stage in terms of retailing.
It is a particular tribute to the people who had the foresight and vision to fund and develop the concept and the team who are managing its ongoing progress. Dundrum Town Centre has been a huge success since its opening some 2 years ago, with in excess of 30 Million visitors having come through its doors to date. It now offers over 100 international ‘brand’ stores, 29 restaurants, a 12 screen cinema, a theatre, town square with dramatic water fountains and 3,400 car spaces.’
The award ensures automatic entry onto the shortlist for the world award which will be announced in Phoenix, Arizona in the Autumn.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony Michael Kercheval, President and CEO of ICSC said, ‘Quite simply Dundrum Town Centre has raised the bar internationally for Shopping centre development and the shopping centre industry. It has become a focal point and “must visit” centre for anybody serious about the development of new shopping destinations’.
